The Metaverse — Explained
An Introduction To Metaverse ️⚡️
The Metaverse is slowly but steadily starting to get attention from people from all around the world. In order to give you a quick introduction of what Metaverse is, we will say to think of it as a 3D virtual reality powered by the Internet, Virtual Reality (VR), artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality (AR), and the Internet of Things (IoT). 🚀
Where did the idea come from?
There are a few opinions about where did the idea for Metaverse come from. Because of that, it might be a difficult task to tell you for sure who should be “held accountable” for the creation of the Metaverse. In every case, let’s explore these views! ⬇️
Some people are saying that the Metaverse was inspired by the annual artsy festival Burning Man. This festival is held every year in Black Rock, Nevada, and hundreds of thousands of people go there in order to “escape from the real world”. People that went there described the festival as more like a “movement”, where there are almost no laws, and everyone is just trying to have the best time of their lives. The idea was to bond in nature with complete strangers, have fun, dance, play, or simply said, to build something out of nothing! Once the festival finishes, everyone goes back home to their old lives, same as when you turn off your PlayStation after a long session of gaming!
Others are saying that the whole idea came from the Cyberpunk novel Snow Crash, which was published in 1992 by Neal Stephenson. This novel is about the virtual world of the hacker Hiro Protagonist. In this world, he is experiencing many inequalities and capitalists horrors. The hacker wanted to escape from the real world by going into this virtual world, but then, after seeing all of the cons of this “new world”, he realized that he didn’t want to live there either. So, this novel is not an advertisement for the Metaverse but more like a warning of the Metaverse’s implications. 👀
On the other side, some opinions are even “stretching out” back to the 1800s, to the time of the Great Exhibition at Crystal Palace. There, Victorians were able to show their imaginations by building the first mech animals, submarines, wax machines, etc. The idea was that the Victorians were using the latest tech in order to express their creativity and thus, create a better world.
What is the main difference between the Internet and the Metaverse?
A decade or two ago, most of us weren’t using the internet. Now, in all developed countries, a life without the internet is almost unimaginable. The internet is like an infrastructure that provides network services to a few billion computers, other electronic devices, and servers. Once we are online, we use the internet to communicate, browse websites, play games, and buy and sell services and goods. 😉
So, there is no competition between the Internet and the Metaverse. Instead, we can say that the Metaverse is being built using the Internet and other newer technologies. In the Metaverse, the users are exploring the virtual world that is looking somewhere similar to the physical world by using technologies like augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), digital currencies, and social media.
Some of the world’s governments are already trying to reach the Metaverse. As an example, the Government of Barbados is planning to “open” a diplomatic embassy 🏢 . Its plan is to create this virtual embassy in the Metaverse of the crypto project Decentraland, which uses the currency MANA. 👀
Which technology is needed for the Metaverse, AR or VR?
The Metaverse is not a simple virtual place that relies just on one technology. Instead, it is a brand new world that uses and intends to use many promising technologies, including VR and AR devices. Each of these devices has its own method of interaction.
For example, when using VR devices, you will have the possibility to engage in gaming and meetings actively. VR technology is letting you experience things like moving around or touching an object.
On the other hand, the use of AR technology in the Metaverse will change society completely. AR glasses :eyeglasses: have the ability to merge the real world with the virtual world. When using AR devices, you will be able to see the real world through a digital “interface”, thus, experiencing and seeing things that don’t exist in the physical world.
Is it really safe to be in the Metaverse world?
This is a question that we really have to consider before “diving” into the Metaverse world. If you are familiar with Ready Play One and Snow Crash, you should already know that their storylines are set in some grim and bizarre dystopian societies. So, the question if we are able to create a responsible and safe Metaverse environment is already brought “to the table”. 🧐
For example, earlier this year, a woman reported that she was sexually attacked, harassed, and even “virtually gang-raped” while she was in the Metaverse! Some of the digital privacy experts are saying that the Metaverse is going to be used as a mega surveillance tool! Ibrahim Baggili, a digital forensics scientist and cybersecurity expert, is saying that the Metaverse collects data on your hand movements, eye-tracking movements, your environment, and much more. He adds that we will have to create a legal framework of what happens if someone gets harassed in the Metaverse.
Also, the Metaverse is currently similar to the Wild West West. A virtual land without laws, where you can do anything that is supported by our technologies. However, we all know that the Wild West is not a safe place to be. Instead of outlaws and bandits, in the Metaverse, there are scammers and hackers who are preying on some inexperienced victims.
Are there any Metaverses that exist already? 👀
Roblox — A multiplayer game where every creator can do a project and then share it with the other players. Even though this game is a segment of the metaverse technology yet, it was created back in 2006!
Minecraft — This is a game of a simulated world mostly used by teenagers and kids. In the virtual world of Minecraft, you will be able to create almost anything from building blocks that look like Lego blocks. Minecraft was released in May 2009!
Meta — This is the company that owns Facebook, Instagram, Whatsup, Oculus VR, etc. Mark Zukerberg. This Metaverse is trying to combine social media with physical reality by using technologies like their own virtual reality headsets.
Second life — A virtual 3D sandbox where the users can build whatever they want. Besides creating stuff, you will be able to go to libraries, concerts, and even go to some virtual religious events like the Hajj. In fact, it is a huge place “populated” by more than 15 million people.
Are we going to live in the Metaverse anytime soon? 🧐
According to some experts, a huge percentage of people are going to be in the Metaverse by 2030.👈🏽 Yeah, it is true that some people are already obsessed with the idea of living there, but also, there are some that are questioning if that is a “safe bet”. The experts are also saying that by using the mix of behavioral and physical biometrics, sentiment analysis, emotion recognition, and personal data, the Metaverse will have the ability to create an enhanced and customized reality for each of us. Some of them are even saying that the AR wearables are going to be “irreplaceable” as smartphones are today.
The last September, Seoul 🇰🇷 became the first city in the world that announced a plan to become a Meta City. In this announcement, it is said that it wants to create a fully developed virtual ecosystem for economic, educational, cultural, tourism, and civic services. The SMG (Seoul Metropolitan Government) said that it will open a “Metaverse 120 Center” by 2023 🏪 This is going to be a virtual public service center in the Metaverse that will provide business support services and facilities to the users.
In addition, some of the biggest tourist attractions in Seoul are going to be added to the “Virtual Tourist Zone”, and people will be able to visit them in the virtual world. Also, the Seoul Lantern Festival and other leading Seoul festivals will be easily accessible in this amazing Metaverse!
How to make money in the Metaverse? 💰
Even though the Metaverse currently is mostly correlated with gaming, this is not the only reason why people are starting to be interested in this subject. Instead, many people are trying to get creative, make money, and even create their own businesses in the Metaverse.
As you know, Duelist King is a game powered by the Blockchain. It is a first generational NFT card game that aims to transform how people play, earn and enjoy their games through state-of-the-art gameplay, out-of-this-world asset design, alongside the model of win2earn. Our game is built on the Cardano and BSC Blockchains and supported by Polygon, Fantom, and Cronos. Thus, Duelist King is intrinsically connected to the future of Blockchain technology.
The Metaverse will embody a great deal of Blockchain technology. Therefore, Duelist King is already in this Metaverse ecosystem. But to what extent will Duelist King have its own Metaverse or be part of the wider Web3 environment? Our Co-Founder and CEO, Dũng Trần, had this to say about Duelist King's place in the Metaverse:
"Currently, Duelist King is not big enough to have its Metaverse. In the future, I see Duelist King as a game platform that can provide the tools and infrastructure for larger Metaverse providers. We will try to plug the gaps in terms of what is missing in the Metaverse."- CEO Dũng Trần.
In early 2022, one believer in Second Life has become a multimillionaire just by purchasing virtual parcels and reselling them! 💰 Another thing that people are trying to exploit is personalization. We are thinking of personalized animations, avatars, clothing, music, poses, houses, and any other digital art. After all, the people that are going to spend a big portion of their lives in the Metaverse are really going to care about their status and what their Avatars look like.
One thing is for sure. If you consider yourself a creative entrepreneur, there are no limits on what you can do in the Metaverse. You should start learning about every Metaverse’s aspects, explore it by using VR headsets, and who knows, you might even become a billionaire and start some kind of a revolution in the Metaverse.
So, the Metaverse is not just an advanced video game? 👾
As we previously said, at this moment, the Metaverse is mainly used for gaming 🎮 However, you should understand that there isn’t a single Metaverse, but instead, any company or game can create its own Metaverse. For example, if you take a look at the online game Fortnite, you will notice that people are using their avatars in order to interact and engage with other player’s avatars. While they are doing that, they are also earning virtual currency that can be later used to unlock some special outfits for their avatars.
However, if we start observing the game Second Life, we will see that it is a simulation game that enables its users to experience virtual reality. There, the players can eat, shop, shower, speak, dance, and do everything that’s possible in the physical world. According to Metaverse visionaries, the Metaverse will empower the people by not just doing anything that is possible in real life but instead even doing some things that are still not possible in real life.
Final words 👇🏽
With all the technologies that are being developed on a daily basis, we can be sure that the world is changing at a pace as never before in the history of the human race. It is a fact that now, people are spending much more time online, browsing the web. On the other hand, suddenly, many people started speaking about the Metaverse.
However, the opinions about the Metaverse are divided. Some people are looking forward to it, and they are trying to hop on this “digital train” as soon as possible by grabbing all of the advantages and possibilities that Metaverse allows. Others are afraid of the “dangers” of this new 3D virtual world in terms of “unplugging from the real world”, surveillance, and digital harassment.
That’s why we would say that we should stay open-minded and continue getting educated on the Metaverse subject while continuously working on its adoption, safety, and usability.
